Applications of GIS

Utilities

Maximum percentage of utility data management contains spatial components. Hence, GIS plays an important role in Utilities management.

Telecommunications - ATPL’s GIS based telecommunications application succeeds in financial & inventory controls, maximization of utilization of installed physical inventory and high quality of uninterrupted service to the customers. GIS based telecommunication application includes:

  • Inventory management and equipment placement
  • Providing network data
  • Fault location and service maintenance
  • Maintenance and tracking of network assets
  • Fiber sheath tracing
  • Real-time graphical display of network devices by interfacing to status monitoring systems
  • Fiber facilities management
  • GPS Interface to pick up the data to be plotted on maps

Power - The process of routing energy is mainly dependent on geographic information. GIS plays a crucial role in Power Sector management by:

  • Tracking of numerous poles, circuits, power lines, and transformers
  • Identifying suitable site for new transmission lines
  • Information of location, voltage, and distribution of electricity
  • Management of information on :
    • » Distribution of electricity to customers
    • » Attributes of each customer such as location and electricity use
  • Detects faulty power lines and transformers which in the past had led to major power cuts
  • Plans the distribution of services to areas that do have access to electricity to locate customers and areas for possible extension of service
  • Detect missing meters and by-passed meters from offices
  • Residents can be assured that before the transformers reach their expiry dates, the pipes can be replaced, hence avoiding breaking down of power network and power cuts
  • Monitors power poles before they’re faulty

Banking- GIS can also play an important role in various functional areas of banking by adding a component called “Location” to bank’s database. This includes:

  • Preparation of zonation map of City
  • Preparation of road map of City
  • Location of ATM Centers using GPS data
  • Location of customers using Geocoding
  • Classification of defaulters based on type of defaulter’s viz., Credit Card, Housing Loan and Personal Loan
  • Analysis of the defaulters, to find the location of the defaulters, method of collection, with respect to the Bankers
  • From defaulter’s point of view, suggestions made to learn the exact location of the ATM etc
  • Map showing different types of defaulters
  • Distance based analysis of defaulters
  • Cash Van Fleet management for Cash distribution
